Women in Islam Seminar

The Libyan Arab Cultural Centre in Valletta in collaboration with the Arabic Culture Information Society organised a seminar about women at Europe House, Valletta on 27 August, 2010, at 6pm.The seminar talked about the place of woman before and after Islam.The discussion included the status of the woman, her duties and rights, the positive and negative effects of the change of her status in society, her actions. The seminar was hosted by Mrs Sanaa EL-Nahhal, president of the Arabic Culture Information Society and Arabic Language, teacher for foreign students at the Libyan Arab Cultural Centre in Valletta. The speakers of the seminar were Mrs Mary Ann Musct Azzopardi, lecturer at the University of Malta in Social Policy, Mrs Nathalie Grima, a member of Koperattiva Kummerc Gust and presently also sitting for a BA Sociology Honours course and has a particular interest in the topic of women in Islam, Mrs Laila Ahmed Losta, who works at the Libyan Embassy in Malta and who also represented Libya in several national and international seminars and Ms Lina El-Nahhal who is of Palestinian origin and a third and final year student at the University of Malta reading a degree in European Studies. Guests were also encouraged to participate in the discussion. A Buffet Dinner was held afterwards.

ACIS participated together with the Local Council of San Gwann in Jum San GWann held near the parish church of San GWann. There were several performances by several young people from San Gwann, including dancing and singing. The ACIS Dabkah group participated with 2 traditional Middle Eastern dances.

A peaceful gathering was organised by ACIS in Valletta to show support to Al Aqsa Mosque on 6 April, 2010.
ACIS believed that Whether one is a Muslim or not, Al Aqsa Mosque is a building that is full of history and
narratives not just for the Palestinians, but for all the people worldwide, and it deserves to be protected,
if not for the Palestinians, for the world heritage that it constitutes. Several friends and members of the organisation gathered in Valletta to show their support.


International Nights at Malta Drama Centre



Worldfest at Upper Barracca Gardens

On Sunday, May 16 2010, from 10.00am to 10.00pm, the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta hosted hundreds of Fair Traded food items and crafts from Malta and small communities in Latin America, Asia and Africa, and a series of events celebrating Food Sovereignity at this yearís ninth edition of WorldFest.This Fair Trade Festival was organized by the volunteers of Koperattiva Kummerc Gust in collaboration with other organisations. This year's edition included a traditional Ethiopian coffee ritual, a public forum in Maltese on food sovereignity, a stand by two Mexican workers and labour rights activists who have been invited to Malta to share their experiences, different activities for children and teenagers, a performance of forum theatre, and a concert featuring a young international female trio, traditional dabkah by ACIS dance and the up-and-coming Maltese band Plato’s Dream Machine.


Nakba Concert at Mosque

A concert was organised at the Paola Mosque to commemmorate the passing of 62 years to the Nakba that took place in Palestine in 1948. Several students of Mariam Al Batool school participated by singing songs and reciting poems addressed to Palestine. Members of ACIS sang 2 anthems addressed to Palestine and the war on Gaza. Moreover, the young children of ACIS performed a play about Jerusalemm directed by Mrs Sanaa El-Nahhal.

Middle Eastern Night

A Middle Eastern Night was organised by ACIS on 24 and 25 April 2010 at the Malta Drama Centre in Hamrun. The participating countries included Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Sudan. There were several dance performances, singing and traditional food from countries all around the Middle East.

International Night

International Night was organised at Golden Tulip Vivaldi Hotel by ACIS along with the help of several other organisations. There was music, dancing, exhibitions, traditional costumes and food from over 20 countries from all around the world. Performances include belly dancing, singing from Slovenia, Sudan, Japan, Jordan and Malta, traditional Middle Eastern dance and traditional costumes exhibition. There were also several tables with traditional food and sweets from different countries.

The Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival was held at St John's Cavalier in Birgu, from 10 to 12 September, where several poets from all around the Mediterranean were invited to recite some of their works. ACIS set up a stand where Arabic food was sold and proceeds from the sale of the food went directly to the children and youngsters of Palestine.

Riddimfusion at Lower Barracca Gardens

ACIS participated in Riddimfusion that was held at Lower Barrakka Gardens, Valletta.There were several performances from several bands including the Maltese band Brikkuni.
ACIS had a stand at the event where it was able to promote Arabic culture including traditional Arabic food and Arabic souvenirs.

The Kieku l-ikel jitkellem / The Right to Food project is essentially a network of people and organizations working on the theme of food sovereignity for the fair trade festival WorldFest in May 2009 which is organized by Koperattiva Kummerċ Ġust of the world shop L-Arka in St. Paul's Street, Valletta.WorldFest ‘09 Programme Saturday, 9th May 2009 Ġnien l-Indipendenza, Sliema 10.00am-10.00pm, free entrance Fair Trade food and handicrafts from L-ARKA. At 7pm there was ethnic food for sale from Palestine, Eritrea and Somalia. The ACIS participated as an NGO in preparing food from Palestine.

Nakba at Valletta

2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, meaning the disaster, the catastrophe. The Nakba commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the displacement of the Palestinians from their villages in Palestine. Demonstrators gathered at the centre of Valletta and carried posters to explain to the Maltese public the suffering of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories and in the refugee camps.

The Arabic Language Centre organised an international evening at the hall of the Mosta local council. Different cultures from around the world came to life through traditional food as well as traditional music. The countries included Malta, Palestine, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Sudan, Japan, Scotland and Slovenia.

Eid Al Adha or Feast of Sacrifice is another very important Muslim occassion. It is a religious festival celebrated as a commemoration of God's forgiveness of Ibrahim (Abraham) from his vow to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, as commanded by Allah. The centre organised a party for the children to celebrate this special day.
