A Palestinian Woman's Journey

Sanaa El-Nahhal, a Palestinian woman from Gaza, single-handedly collected humanitarian aid from the Maltese public, which she herself flew to Gaza in January 2009. The donations included 56 boxes full of aid weighing a total of 850 kilograms.

Ms El-Nahhal, who has been living in Malta with her family for more than 20 years, is still being helped by the Maltese public to collect more donations in aid of the injured people of Palestine.

The plight of the Palestinians is still strong and much more is needed to help them overcome their loss. In fact, Sanaa has organized a fund-raising activity on the 25th April 2009 and has also help out in the yearly Worldfest which is organized by Koperattive Kummerc Gust. The money collected from Sanaa's participation will also be channelled to the aid of the Palestinian people. In the coming weeks ACIS will be in Valletta collecting donations gently given by the Maltese public.

This multiple event in aid of the Palestinians will culminate in Sanaa's delivery of the Maltese donations in Gaza and West Bank.

MaltaToday's journalist Karl Schembri followed Ms El-Nahhal on her trip to Rafah and reporting about the situation at the Rafah Crossing. For more information and Sanaa's diary, log on to www.maltatoday.com.mt.

Fund Raising Reception in aid of the Injured People of Gaza

The Arabic Culture Information Society organised a fund-raising reception in aid of the injured people of the war of Gaza. The reception was held on the 25th of April at St. Ignatius College, Boy's Secondary School, Tal-Handaq, Qormi at 19.30.

A group of around 30 young people who hail from Palestine, Malta, Libya, Syria and Sudan started to meet regularly to prepare everything for the reception. On the 8th April, they went to Valletta to promote the fund-raising reception by giving out fliers. On the 9th April 2009, the group of young Maltese people met at the centre in San Gwann to practice the traditional Palestinian dance, Dabkah, which they performed in the reception. Then, the group of young people started to meet every 4 days to prepare and rehearse for this event. They tried their best to make this reception successful.

On the day of the reception, they went to the venue from the morning and prepared everything (projector, tables, transport of things, etc). Many people attended the fund raiser as well as Mr. John Dalli who said a speech and Mr. Kenneth Busuttil, Vice-mayor of Qormi Local Council who also said a speech and recited a poem about Gaza. The president of the ACIS, Mrs. Sanaa El-Nahhal welcomed the guests and recited a poem about Gaza as well as Mr. Adrian Grima, Mr. Waid Nabhan, Ms. Lara Vassallo and Mr. Vince. Other guests included Mr Al Saadi, Imam of Mosque in Paola and Mr. Micallef, Principal of St Ignatius College.

The reception opened with the National Anthems of Palestine and Malta and ended with the traditional Palestinian dance, Dabkah. Other activities of the reception included a documentary about Palestine, and Palestinian food.

This event was held with the support of the Local Councils of San Gwann and Hal Qormi and the Mosque in Paola. The money collected during and after this event will be for the injured people of the Gaza War.

We hope that we continue with this work so that we can help more the people of Gaza.
